AREAS OF EMPHASIS:
Conservation-based management strategies are often informed by place-based knowledge's. This emphasis will explore how management techniques such as mitigation, restoration, and planning are informed by ecological, cultural, and social understandings.
Air and water are essential resources supporting life on Earth and are legally protected natural resources. This emphasis focuses on (1) the challenges to sustaining good quality air and water, particularly in areas prone to water scarcity and increased probability of air pollution, (2) the influence of degraded resources on the health of individuals, society and ecosystems, and (3) options for maintaining clean air and water in the face of current and future constraints.
The education and social change emphasis utilizes a transdisciplinary approach to help students better understand education and social change in the context of social, political, economic, and ethical dimensions of socio-ecological systems. Students will have the opportunity to learn about the history, theories, means, processes, organizations, and institutions that influence sustainability education, policies, and social justice.
The Climate & Energy emphasis focuses on the interrelatedness of energy systems, their effects, and our global climate system. Students will have the opportunity to examine these connections from multiple disciplines and explore how they affect society.
The food systems and community resilience emphasis engages students with complex relationships associated with food, including demands on the global ecosystem, health and well-being of diverse communities, and the ways that bioregionalism can build more resilient populations.
Students will examine the dominant agricultural system in relation to agroecology and other alternative food systems embedded in community, while considering questions related to food sovereignty, environmental sustainability, and justice. Students will work to create and enhance food systems that sustain human communities and the environment in which they live.
